CareerBuilder.com Partners with Department of Labor's President's National Hire Veterans Committee to Help U.S. Veterans Find Employment

CHICAGO, June 28, 2004 - CareerBuilder.com, the largest online job network with more than 16 million unique visitors* and over 500,000 jobs, announced it has partnered with the Department of Labor’s President’s National Hire Veterans Committee, a new organization focused on promoting the value of hiring U.S. veterans in the public and private sectors. CareerBuilder.com is leveraging its wide network of recruitment resources to support the Committee’s efforts in helping U.S. veterans connect with the nation’s top employers.

"America’s veterans are a unique national resource with skill sets and intangible traits that make them a special asset in our workforce," said Frederico Juarbe, Jr., Assistant Secretary of the Department of Labor, Veterans Employment and Training Service. "The President’s National Hire Veterans Committee was established to assist employers in finding veterans, especially those newer ones who are just transitioning into the workforce after serving their country. CareerBuilder.com understands the importance of this initiative and is a welcome partner in this program."

"As the leader in online recruitment, CareerBuilder.com is committed to assisting the President’s National Hire Veterans Committee in raising awareness of the training and skills veterans have to offer to all sectors of our economy," said William Jones, Director of CareerBuilder.com’s Federal Government Services Division. By applying our technology resources with our national and local reach, we are delivering the resources employers and veteran job seekers need to find the right match for their professional interests."

The Department of Labor reports that 4.8 percent of U.S. veterans are unemployed, compared to the national average of 5.6 percent of all workers as of May, 2004. The 20 to 24 age group has the highest unemployment rate amongst U.S. veterans. In May, 2004, there were 244,000 veterans aged 20 to 24 in the civilian labor force, 15.8 percent of which did not have jobs. To the contrary, the unemployment rate for Vietnam-era veterans, ages 45 to 64 was 4.7 percent.
