Workers Retain Trust in Their Corporate Leaders, CareerBuilder Survey Reveals

Corporate Leaders Also Receive High Ratings from Workers for Being Hardworking and Keeping Staff Members Informed

CHICAGO, Aug. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- While the discovery of corporate scandals permeates the news, workers' trust in corporate leaders continues to be strong. In its efforts to track worker opinions and attitudes, a new CareerBuilder survey, "Life at Work," reveals that the percentage of workers who rated their corporate leaders as trustworthy remains constant at 52 percent, compared to a survey completed last August. Also remaining unchanged is the 51 percent of workers who felt that their corporate leaders kept staff members informed regarding overall company objectives and future plans. This new CareerBuilder survey of more than 1,400 full-time workers was completed in July.

"With all the fear, uncertainty and doubt that exists in today's business climate, it is reassuring to note that workers still trust their corporate leaders," said Dawn Haden, a senior career advisor at CareerBuilder, the industry's most complete online recruitment source for efficiently finding better candidates and jobs. "Trust is earned and not granted by a position or title and obviously, corporate leaders today have earned the trust of workers. As organizations navigate the changing business environment, it is the trust in these corporate leaders that helps motivate workers to meet the goals and objectives of their respective organization."

Trust in Corporate Leaders
Fifty-seven percent of supervisors, managers, directors and vice presidents reported that they find their corporate leaders trustworthy compared to 50 percent of staff members. A higher percentage of men (54 percent) trusted corporate leaders compared to women (52 percent). Of those who rated their corporate leaders as trustworthy, 28 percent indicated that they had worked for the same company from one to less than three years.

In the Know
Workers who are well-informed about an organization's objectives and future plans feel that they are part of the team. Three-fourths of those who rated their leaders as trustworthy also felt that their leaders kept staff members informed. Fifty-three percent of men felt informed about corporate objectives and future plans as compared to 50 percent of women.

Working Hard
Overwhelmingly, eight-in-ten workers rated corporate leaders as somewhat to extremely hardworking and 46 percent of these workers rated corporate leaders as very or extremely hardworking. Fifty percent of supervisors, managers, directors and vice presidents felt that corporate leaders were hardworking compared to 45 percent of staff members.

The Survey

The new CareerBuilder survey, "Life at Work," was conducted from July 11 to July 18, 2002 of more than 1,400 respondents. To collect data for the survey, CareerBuilder commissioned SurveySite to use an e-mail methodology whereby individuals who are members of SurveySite Web Panel were randomly selected and approached by e-mail invitation to participate in the online survey. The results of this survey are accurate within +/- 2.5 percent. In August 2001, CareerBuilder conducted The Survey
, "Workers in the New Economy of Choice: A Career Portrait," of more than 1,200 full-time workers.
