Today's Job Reality: Workers Grin and Bear It

CareerBuilder Survey Finds Workers Still Confident; Job Satisfaction Declines

RESTON, Va., March 12 /PRNewswire/ -- A new CareerBuilder survey of 2,500 U.S. workers finds that overall job satisfaction is on the decline -- from 69 percent in January 2001 to 61 percent in February 2002. However, workers remain generally confident about job prospects in the Post-9/11 economy. Sixty-eight percent of workers report that they can find a comparable job within three months should they be laid off, according to The Survey
, Job Search 2002.

"Workers remain resilient and many are still optimistic about job prospects," said Barry Lawrence, a senior career advisor with CareerBuilder. "However, job satisfaction has been steadily declining since 2001. Workers are growing weary as they absorb more negative corporate news and they are forced to take on additional responsibilities as companies downsize. Also, many workers are settling for second choices in career opportunities."

Over half of workers state that they continue to work under a great deal of stress. Four-in-ten workers are dissatisfied with pay. Almost one-fourth of workers are dissatisfied with the experience that they are getting through their jobs.

Since August 2001, prior to the terrorist attacks on September 11, CareerBuilder has been measuring worker attitudes, including perceptions about work, job satisfaction and the time it takes to find comparable jobs in the event of layoffs. CareerBuilder calls this last measure the CareerBuilder Job Rebound Index:

Can find, if laid off, a comparable job in: August 2001 / February 2002
Less than 30 Days: 47 percent / 39 percent
Less than three months: 75 percent / 68 percent
More than 6 months: 14 percent / 17 percent

About the Job Search 2002 Survey
The CareerBuilder Job Search 2002 was conducted January 30, 2002, through February 5, 2002. A total of 2,550 workers participated in The Survey
. To collect data for The Survey
, CareerBuilder commissioned SurveySite to use an e-mail methodology whereby individuals who are members of SurveySite Web Panel were randomly selected and approached by e-mail invitation to participate in the online survey. The results of this survey are accurate within +/- 1.9 percentage points (19 times out of 20). Using a similar methodology, CareerBuilder has also conducted the following surveys: Job Satisfaction 2001 (January, 2001), Workers in a New Economy: A Career Portrait (August, 2001), and Worker Resilience: Post 9/11 (October, 2001).
